HR Solution for a leading cruise line company:

The company is one of the top cruise lines in the world operating luxury cruises to the Caribbean in the winter and Alaska in the summer. The fleet travels around the world and to specific destinations in the Far East, Panama Canal, South Pacific and Hawaii. Being a global enterprise, the company's information system requirements range from on-board transaction processing to land/sea telecommunications.

The company uses multi-user open systems for each of its four luxury cruise ships. Holland America has equipped each ship with two Motorola multi-user systems. The main system runs a point-of-sale (POS) application and automatically updates a second system used for inventory tracking.

The personnel contracts limit the company's employees to work for a period of four to eleven months. After their contract expires, a staff member may leave for a specified period of time and return under a new contract to a different ship.

The seagoing personnel system was designed to administer and track seagoing personnel resources. It features the following functions:

  • Maintain and track personnel information
  • Define and staff positions
  • Review seagoing staffing costs
  • Arrange for assignment, boarding and repatriation
  • Arrange for repatriation or end of contract
  • Administer contracts
  • Define and administer benefits
This system was developed for use on a Motorola system. The configuration of the system includes an M88100 processor, a 8mm 2.3 gigabyte tape drive, two 600 megabyte disc storage systems and two SCSI controllers. The Motorola system is networked via TCP/IP.

The system was designed using ORACLE CASE ver 5.0 on a SUN workstation. ORACLE RDBMS ver 6.0 was used for database management. ORACLE tools such as SQL*FORMS ver 3.0, SQL*MENU ver 5.0, SQL*REPORTWRITER ver 1.1, PRO*C, SQL*NET, TCP/IP and SQL*PLUS were used to develop the system.
