Risk Management Application Benchmarks for a leading
financial institution:
The company is one of the largest financial institutions in the world. A leading Information Technology innovator, the company has been rated highly for effective use of technology.
The company is a pioneer in the client/server engineering domain. The large databases resided on DB2 and RDB platforms. SYBASE SQL SERVER was the RDBMS on the medium range server.
Given the nature of financial operations, time-sensitivity is a critical factor in such an IT solution. The company sought to implement a Risk Management system to function in an almost real time basis. Before designing the database for this application, the distribution of the database between the mainframe and the SYBASE servers needed to be determined.
The project involved testing of the Risk Management application for performance on SQL SERVER on OS/2, SYBASE on RS/6000, MDI GATEWAY for DB2/SQL SERVER on OS/2 and SYBASE GATEWAY for DB2 on RS/6000.
It involved setting up SQL SERVERs on OS/2 and RS/6000 using different protocols such as NAMED PIPES and TCP/IP. The MDI GATEWAY was set up with NAMED PIPES using OS/2 COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER. The SYBASE GATEWAY was set up with TCP/IP using AIX SNA services. Extremely complex configurable parameters for these gateways had to be set up. Establishing more connections was a big challenge as it ran out of resources on the mainframe.
Infinix developed benchmark programs in VISUAL BASIC using parameters such as expected traffic, response times as a function of traffic, potential problem situations, etc. The benchmark has generated positive confidence in the platform combinations selected namely, OS/2, DB2, NAMED PIPES, and RS/6000, DB2, TCP/IP.
